Producer/Director: Todd Wider & Jedd Wider
Cinematographer: Gerardo Puglia Editor: Keiko Deguchi

The body of a homeless woman is found in an abandoned New Hampshire farmhouse. Beside the body, lies a diary that documents a journey of starvation and the loss of sanity, but told with poignance, beauty, humor, and spirituality.  For nearly four months, Linda Bishop survived on apples and rain water, waiting for God to save her, during one of the coldest winters on record. As her story unfolds from different perspectives, including her own, we learn about our systemic failure to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

The OFF Academy is a two-day educational outreach intended for high school students to learn the process of filmmaking from industry professionals.

Pre-registered students will receive an OFF Academy badge which will grant them access to all of the OFF Academy panels.

Participant Check-in / Breakfast from 8:00am - 9:00am

In its eleventh year, the Omaha Film Festival looks to significantly increase its educational reach with the announcement of the First Annual OFF Academy.  With over 100 students registered from a dozen high schools, sessions will take place on Thursday and Friday, March 10 & 11 at the Funny Bone Comedy Club, directly across the street from the Village Pointe Theatre.

With industry professionals from across the country the two-day sessions will give students an inside look at screenwriting, acting, cinematography, film lighting, animation, editing, directing, and producing and will include hands-on interactive workshops targeting students in the disciplines they’re most interested in.

In addition to the Academy, the students are all invited to participate in everything the Omaha Film Festival has to offer which includes the Writer’s Theatre, the Filmmakers Conference, and the over 100 films that will screen at the Village Pointe Theatre from March 8-13.

RWANDA AND JULIET is a feature-length documentary that follows eccentric ivy league professor emeritus Andrew Garrod to Kigali, Rwanda, where he mounts Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with Rwandan college students from both Hutu and Tutsi backgrounds. Twenty years have passed since the 1994 Genocide that left 1,000,000 Tutsis dead. Predominantly orphans, the cast of young Rwandans, led by a stunning, strong headed Juliet, tackle their countries past and their own future as hopes, expectations, pasts, personalities and cultures collide as opening night approaches.

Cast:  Marie Brassard, Francis LaHaye, Hugo Giroux, Youssef Camara, Michel Forget, Paul Ahmarani, Mireille Metelus, Hamidou Savadogo, Amadou et Mariam, Phyllis Gooden, Anik Vermette

Sabali is a dramatic film with touches of absurdist comedy, and features surrealist dream sequences and a colourful art design. The story is centered on Jeannette, who has a severe heart condition that keeps her trapped in a suburb of Montreal. After receiving her new heart, Jeannette begins to have strange visions of her donor's former life. Soon after, she is befriended by her donor's son, a Malian teenager, who believes she is his mother reincarnated. The story itself is based on the scientific concept of cellular memory, the idea that cells contain memories, and that organ recipients sometimes take on the personality traits of their donors.

When Voices Meet: One Divided Country; One United Choir; One Courageous Journey
(Documentary)
USA, South Africa -  86 minutes

Director: Nancy Sutton Smith
Executive Producer: Marilyn Cohen

When Nelson Mandela was finally released from prison, South African musician and music therapist Sharon Katz joined with singer/educator Nonhlanhla Wanda to bring together 500 courageous Black and White youth and form a multiracial choir that would break through Apartheid's barriers. Threatened with bombs and thwarted at every turn, they prevailed and railroaded across the country aboard The Peace Train. Singing their way into the hearts, minds and soul of a divided nation in the midst of a civil war, they promoted a peaceful transition to democracy and went on to become Mandela's face of the new nation. When Voices Meet documents the trials, tribulations and triumphs of those musician activists and young choir members. They performed together for seven years; never lost touch with one another; and then reunited 20 years later to tell their stories and reflect upon The Peace Train's impact on South Africa today. It's an inspiring global story of hope and determination despite tremendous obstacles.

Omaha has a long-standing problem with gangs and youth-on-youth violence and is one of the most dangerous cities to live in for African American youth. 'I Dream of an Omaha Where . . .' is a collaborative project involving former gang members and people who have been affected by gangs.  The project, moderated by nationally known performer and writer Daniel Beaty, takes the participants through intense and moving workshops to a performance of a play which utilizes the transcripts of the workshops. The 'I Dream' project was a transformative experience for those sharing their stories, and is also changing the dialogue in Omaha and similarly affected cities about the nature and impact of gang violence.
